Budget Vacation This Year ?

.........Budget and moderate vacations have the same rewards -- just fewer comforts. Many of our favorite trips were budget ones. No, the sheets weren't smooth and silky, but we got to see the world and met great people.
Faves: Backpacking through Europe (get a Eurail-pass or rent a car (www.rentabc.com); pick up a guidebook from Let's Go, Real Guides or Lonely Planet); wandering through Southeast Asia (grab a Lonely Planet guide); a 10-day trip to Egypt including a cruise on the Nile for $660 ( www.explore-worldwide.com); a two-week camping trip through South Africa, Botswana and to Victoria Falls for under $1,500 (run by Wagontrails and booked through www.siyabona.com) and a two-week tour of China, including airfare from the West Coast for about $2,000 (800-900-2446; www.ritztours.com).
A great source for money-wise tours for the under-35 crowd: STA Travel, www.statravel.com.
Even if you're beyond the penny-pinching stage, packaged holidays that include air and hotel can be a great value. The hotels included are clean and have private baths.
