Prepaid travel earns elite mileage status

If you expect to spend at least $5,000 on airline travel this year, here's a deal that might be for you. United Airlines has announced a program that allows frequent fliers to achieve elite status without logging tens of thousands of miles initially.
Frequent fliers who deposit from $5,000 to $20,000 on a co-branded J.P. Morgan Chase-United prepaid travel card and then spend the money on airline tickets between Feb. 1 of this year and Feb. 28, 2006, will automatically obtain elite status with the airline, without having to fly the 25,000 to 100,000 miles a year needed to reach those top levels.
They'll also get a 5 percent discount on tickets for domestic travel purchased online with the card at United's Web site, www.united.com.
While the move could rile those who fly to earn status, United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said the promotion has been tested among United frequent fliers and was something ``they asked for.''
