DOT ranks the big airlines

If you've already concluded that airline service in the United States just keeps getting worse, you won't find many surprises in the Department of Transportation's Air Travel Consumer Report for 2007. For the most part, airlines did a bit worse this year than last: Mishandled baggage, involuntary denied boardings (bumpings, in civilian language), and consumer complaints were all up this year.

Qantas Welcomes Australia-US 'Open Skies' Agreement

Qantas said today that it welcomed the Australia-US "open skies" agreement announced by the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development.

The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said the airline had supported the Australian Government's efforts to seek fully liberalised air services arrangements between the two countries at negotiations in Washington this week. This had been largely achieved.

"We welcome the outcome. It brings new opportunities for growth and competition. Importantly, it will assist the further development of Australia's aviation industry, as well as help increase trade and tourism with a major economic partner," Mr Dixon said.

The Qantas Group is currently operating at its highest ever frequency - 48 services per week - on the Pacific route. This will increase to 51 services per week as from March. In addition, the airline offers an extensive range of code share connections on US partner airlines to cities within the US, which can be increased under the liberalised arrangements.

Mr Dixon said Qantas was pleased to note the emphasis that the Government was giving to securing increased opportunities for Australian carriers.

"Further liberalisation of air services arrangements with a number of countries is needed if Australian carriers are to grow operations and match opportunities available to foreign competitors."

Mr Dixon said the airline had recently identified a range of markets where liberalisation would be required if Qantas and Jetstar were to fully implement commercial plans.

"We hope to see our commercial plans and priorities reflected in the Government's agenda for future air services negotiations," he said.

Ryanair agrees to end ads for '1p flights'

Next week will mark the end of advertisements for air fares of "1p". The no-frills carrier Ryanair has finally bowed to pressure from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to include all taxes, fees and charges in its headline prices.
Ryanair's website will close between February 22 and February 25. When it reopens, its fares will include all taxes.

The OFT had threatened legal action against any airline that advertised fares that bore little relation to the final price.

On its website, Ryanair claims to "guarantee" the lowest fares. But its taxes and charges are often much higher than those of rivals such as EasyJet.

From next week, when these taxes and charges are included in all published fares, Ryanair will find it harder to claim that it always has the cheapest tickets.

JetBlue goes LAX

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12, 2008

JetBlue Airways today announces a major expansion of service in the western United States, with new premium low-fare service at Los Angeles International Airport plus new intrawest routes from other Southern California regional airports to Austin, Las Vegas, San Diego, San Jose, and Seattle, all beginning this May.

JetBlue already offers more nonstop flights between the East and West Coasts than any low-fare, low-cost airline, and will add even more transcontinental routes with the addition of new nonstop service from LAX to New York and Boston, plus the only nonstop service from Burbank to Washington, D.C. JetBlue will complement its robust schedule of coast-to-coast flying with five new western routes linking Burbank to Las Vegas; Long Beach to Austin, San Jose, and Seattle; and San Diego to Seattle.

JetBlue's expansion in California also marks the West Coast debut of the airline's brand-new EMBRAER 190 aircraft. The full-size E190, a quiet 100-seat jet, will fly select new routes from its focus city at Long Beach Airport and offer travelers all the comforts they've come to expect on JetBlue: 36 channels of free live DIRECTV(r) programming, more than 100 channels of XM Satellite Radio, plus comfy leather seats (either an aisle or window -- never a middle seat!), the most legroom in coach (a), and JetBlue's award-winning inflight experience.

"It's been nearly eight years since JetBlue launched transcontinental service to Ontario, redefining the air travel experience while bringing humanity back to the skies," said JetBlue CEO Dave Barger. "Since then we've expanded to other regional airports including Long Beach and Burbank, attracting customers from across L.A. with low fares and uncommonly good service. Today we're thrilled to give our growing customer base what they've been asking for: JetBlue service on more routes from the L.A. Basin. With the introduction of low-fare flights from LAX, plus added routes throughout California, JetBlue is making it easier than ever to enjoy industry-leading customer service to the East Coast, and now up and down the West Coast, too."

"JetBlue has operated successfully in a very challenging aviation marketplace in recent years by attracting business and leisure travelers with premium service at low prices," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. "The expansion of service in Long Beach and introduction of new routes at LAX and Burbank will, I believe, show that regionalizing air service in the L.A. Basin -- a high priority of my Administration -- is the flight path to future success. Moreover, because of JetBlue's new focus on global partnerships, the new LAX service will help strengthen the LAX international gateway as a key driver of Southern California's economy."

"JetBlue continues to set the industry standard for customer service and low fares," said Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster. "By serving new, sought-after destinations with smaller and quieter aircraft, JetBlue is providing more options for consumers and decreasing the airport's impact on neighborhoods."

"We eagerly await the start of JetBlue's new cross-country service, sure to be welcomed by air travelers looking for more service options and great value," said Gina Marie Lindsey, executive director of Los Angeles World Airports, operator of LAX, LA/Ontario International Airport, LA/Palmdale Regional Airport and Van Nuys Airport. "The addition of JetBlue is a reflection of the progress made in our work to revitalize LAX. At the same time, the carrier's expansion in the region is a vivid reminder that we must continue our efforts to increase service at our airports in Ontario and Palmdale, both of which are primed for growth. We look forward to working with JetBlue's route planners to make the case for new and increased service at these important regional airports."

Delta-NWA, Continental-UA may be close

Merger talks are again hitting the aviation industry.
The deal could be announced soon, according to well informed people who have been briefed on the negotiations. This will mean leaner airlines, synergy and unfortunately for the consumer higher airfares because of less competition.

Kasper, an aviation consultant explained the likely effects a merger would have on airfares and the industry:

"It's important that people understand that fares are likely to go up anyhow. Mergers may have some effect, but mergers also play into the hands of low-cost carriers. It's not as if two carriers merge and that's the end of the game. If those things happen, it's an invitation for Southwest or JetBlue to move into a market."

Nude airline to soar nakedly

German nudists can now be nude at a higher altitude than ever before, as a East German Travel Agent launches special nude flights this year.

The flights of nakedness are a nostalgic throwback to the days of Communism DDR, when naturism was permitted and found widespread popularity.

OssiUrlaub.de located in Erfurt, Germany, is specifically targeting former East Germans pining for their old, clothing-optional ways.
