Delta-NWA, Continental-UA may be close

Merger talks are again hitting the aviation industry.
The deal could be announced soon, according to well informed people who have been briefed on the negotiations. This will mean leaner airlines, synergy and unfortunately for the consumer higher airfares because of less competition.

Kasper, an aviation consultant explained the likely effects a merger would have on airfares and the industry:

"It's important that people understand that fares are likely to go up anyhow. Mergers may have some effect, but mergers also play into the hands of low-cost carriers. It's not as if two carriers merge and that's the end of the game. If those things happen, it's an invitation for Southwest or JetBlue to move into a market."
